Senior Men’s Co. League Div. 3: Round 3 of the men’s County League Division. 3 was played yesterday in Ardfert and Na Gaeil ran out convincing winners on a 2-19 to 1-4 scoreline. Na Gaeil had the advantage of the breeze in the first half and were 4 points to 1 ahead after only 6 minutes. Then an Ardfert free hit the upright and their centre-forward reacted swiftly to slot it past Jack Rogers and level the game. Na Gaeil upped the tempo and dominated the remainder of the half, scoring a further 6 points from Ruairí Ó hAiniféin, Jack Doyle and Jack Sheehan (4) to just a single point for Ardfert to leave our lads ahead 0-10 to 1-2 at the short whistle.
Despite playing against the breeze in the second half our lads continued to work hard and dictated proceedings. Six unanswered points from Fergal Barry, Ruairí Ó hAiniféin, Kieran O’Donovan, Kieran O’Connor, Seán O’Connor (free) and Jack Sheehan saw them race 11 points ahead. A goal apiece from Seán O’Connor and Jack Bourke put the game beyond doubt. Ardfert’s only score of the 2nd half came from a 2-points free midway through the half. As the game petered out to its inevitable conclusion our lads added further points from Kieran O’Connor, Liam Cooper and Jack Sheehan. No game next weekend. Home to Fossa on April 19th in Round 4.
Senior Men’s Co. League Div. 7B: Hard luck to our Senior B team who lost to Beaufort B last Saturday by 2-11 to 0-11 in the Co. League.
Senior Ladies Co. League Div. 1: Na Gaeil Senior ladies made it 2 wins from 2 with a hard-fought win over Dr Crokes in Killarney yesterday in the County League Division 1. Played in ideal conditions with only a slight wind favouring Crokes in the first half, it was the hosts who got off the mark first before a Meagan Sheehy point levelled matters. Our girls had plenty of possession in the first quarter but were finding it hard to penetrate the Crokes rearguard. Crokes struck for their first goal in the 13th minute when our defence was caught out by a long ball over the top and their full-forward made no mistake. Our girls replied with a free from Siena Lucey to stay in touch. Our forwards were applying a strong press on the Crokes kickouts and it paid off in the 16th minute when Nora O’Connell won the Crokes kickout and played in Eilis O’Connor for a good score. There was only one more score in the half and that was another Crokes point, to leave them ahead at halftime by 1-2 to 0-3. Dr Crokes attacked from the throw in and were awarded a penalty. Fortunately for us the kick came back off the cross bar and the rebound was fired wide. Moments later at the other end of the field a free from Siena Lucey reduced the margin to 1 and a minute later the same player kicked the equaliser from play. Then came a priceless Na Gaeil goal. A high ball into the edge of the Crokes square was fielded by Nora O’Connell and she lashed it to the net. Soon afterwards our girls were reduced to 14 players but it didn’t deter them and Meabh Barry got her name on the scoresheet with an important score from a tight angle to stretch the gap to 4 points. Crokes responded with a goal with 12 minutes remaining. Massive credit to our defence which was well marshalled by Sarah Barrett, as this was Crokes only score of the 2nd half. With the lead now just a point our girls didn’t panic and another free from Siena sealed a deserved victory for Na Gaeil on a scoreline of 1-7 to 2-2. Next Sunday Na Gaeil will be at home to Clounmacon at 12pm.
