Senior Men’s Co. League Div. 3: Round 5 of the Credit Union Co. League Div. 3 took place in Killeen yesterday where Na Gaeil welcomed Ballydonoghue and after a game that ebbed and flowed crucially it was our lads who held on to take the 2 valuable Co. League points. Ballydonoghue started well and dominated posession for the first 5 minutes forcing our keeper Conor Bohane into a smart save at the expense of a 45. They converted the 45 to give them an early lead. Jack Doyle, who was prominent throughout the game, came up from defence to level matters and this was soon followed by a Mark Lynch free, a Kieran O’Connor point and an Eoin Doody free to put Na Gaeil ahead 4 points to 1 mid-way thought the half. But then Ballydonoghue took over. A free and a point from play were soon followed by a goal from their full-forward while our only response was 2 wides. The visitors also converted a late free to stretch their half-time lead to 3 points, 1-4 to 0-4. Again Ballydonoghue took control at the start of the second half and scored another free to stretch their lead to 4 points. Minutes later Kieran O’Donovan was at the end of a precise move to notch a point to keep our lads in touch and then in the 10th minute Jamesie O’Connor was on hand to finish to the net after Ballydonoghue failed to clear their lines…Jamesie’s third goal in 2 games! Significantly sub Seán O’Connor entered the fray just about then and he was to have a huge impact on the game. Another free from Ballydonoghue got their noses in front once again but this was immediately cancelled by an excellent Ruairí Ó hAiniféin point from play. Two more frees by Ballydonoghue moved them ahead by 2, 1-8 to 1-6. Then Seán O’Connor got going. First he cut the gap to 1, then moments later he kicked a huge 2-pointer to edge us ahead with 11 minutes remaining. A Jack Sheehan goal effort was blocked but he popped up soon after to kick an important point to put us 2 ahead. Super sub Seán O’Connor then added another point and with 6 minutes remaining we led by 3. We had chances to add to our tally but unfortunately kicked 2 wides leading to a nervy last few minutes. Ballydonoghue attacked in waves looking for an equalising goal but our defence held out, Sean Barrett in particular clearing the danger. A late point from play from the visitors was too little too late and our lads held on for a massive win. Final score: Na Gaeil 1-11, Ballydonoghue 1-9.
